ELSA (The European Law Students' Association) is an international, independent, non-political, non-profit-making organization run by and for students. It is comprised of students and recent graduates who are interested in academic and personal excellence. ELSA offers law students a perfect platform to develop their existing skills, acquire new skills and meet fellow students and legal professionals throughout the Europe.
The goal of the association is to promote the cooperation and mutual understanding between lawyers in Europe, as well as the stimulation of knowledge on other European legal systems. The vision of ELSA is: a just world, in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity'.
Law students from Austria, Hungary, Poland and West Germany founded ELSA in 1981. ELSA is today the world's largest independent law students association and it is represented in more than 220 law faculties in 39 countries across Europe with membership in excess of 30 000 students and young lawyers.
Furthermore, ELSA, as a NGO, has also official consultative status in different organization of the United Nations; ECOSOC, UNCITRAL, UNESCO, en UNHCR. In addition, ELSA has also the participatory status of the Council of Europe and the observer status of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
ELSA Maastricht
ELSA Maastricht is one of the six local groups in the Netherlands with a membership of more than 250 law students, recent graduates and young lawyers. As a student association, located in Maastricht, ELSA is proud to be the only student association with both an international and Dutch character. Because of that we can offer our members an extensive international network.
ELSA Maastricht organizes a lot of study related and recreational activities for its members. For example, excursions, study trips, drinks and conferences. Moreover, ELSA Maastricht also helps its members with traineeships abroad through the student trainee exchange program (STEP).
De European Law Students' Association (ELSA) is een internationale, onafhankelijke, non-politieke organisatie voor rechtenstudenten en jonge juristen in Europa. Lidmaatschap staat open voor rechtenstudenten van alle studierichtingen.

De grote kracht van ELSA is haar uitgestrekte Europese netwerk. Momenteel is ELSA actief in 39 Europese landen met meer dan 220 lokale groepen. Van IJsland tot Malta en van Portugal tot Rusland. De meer dan 30.000 leden vormen samen de grootste juridische vereniging ter wereld.
Bovendien heeft ELSA als NGO de officiële 'consultative' status bij de verschillende instanties van de Verenigde Naties: ECOSOC, UNCITRAL, UNESCO, en UNHCR. Daarnaast heeft ELSA ook de 'participatory' status bij de Raad van Europa, en de 'observer' status bij de World Intellectual Property Organization.
ELSA Maastricht
ELSA Maastricht is een van de zes lokale groepen in Nederland met meer dan 200 leden, waaronder rechtenstudenten en jonge juristen. ELSA Maastricht is de enige studievereniging aan de Maastrichtse Rechtenfaculteit die internationaal georienteerd is en aan Nederlandse en internationale rechtenstudenten een uitgebreid internationaal netwerk biedt.
ELSA Maastricht organiseert vele activiteiten voor haar leden, zowel studie-gerelateerd als recreatief. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan excursies, studie-reizen, borrels en conferenties. Bovendien helpt ELSA Maastricht haar leden aan stageplekken in het buitenland via het Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP).
